Why the cita previa matters

Spain loves its cita previa systems, and the TIE is no exception. In most provinces, you cannot show up without an appointment. To submit your fingerprints and documents, you must book a slot with the National Police foreigner office.

Where to book, only use the official portal

The appointment system is managed through an official government website.

You will often see it under the “cita previa extranjería” portal, usually at sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es

Step by step, how to book your fingerprint appointment

  1. Open the official portal
Enter the cita previa extranjería website and locate the province selector.
  2. Select your province
Choose the province where you live and where you will apply. In general, this should match your address and empadronamiento province.
  3. Choose the correct trámite
Look for wording that includes Toma de huellas, meaning fingerprint collection. The exact label varies by province.
    • Most cases, choose something like POLICIA, TOMA DE HUELLAS, EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA and related renewal options
    • If you are under the entrepreneur, UGE scheme, you may see a separate option tied to approvals resolved by central authorities
    • If you see multiple similar options, avoid ones that explicitly restrict to Larga Duración unless you are actually long term
  4. Read the notes and continue
The portal may show instructions and document notes for your province. Read them, then proceed.
  5. Enter your personal details
Prepare to fill in the fields carefully, typos can cause problems at the appointment.
    • NIE, if you already have one, otherwise use passport if the portal allows it
    • Name and surname, exactly as in your passport
    • Nationality and date of birth
    • Captcha
  6. Select office and slot
Depending on the province, you may choose among multiple police stations. Then select a date and time if available.
  7. Confirm and save proof
Once confirmed, save the confirmation page. Print it if possible. If email confirmation is offered, keep that too.

If the portal says “no hay citas disponibles”, what to do

In major cities, appointment scarcity is common. This does not mean you should stop trying. Your goal is to secure a booked appointment as early as possible.

Urgent situations, when your deadline is close

If your legal deadline is approaching and you genuinely cannot book any slot, you have a few reasonable escalation options. Outcomes vary by province, but these routes are commonly used.

  1. Visit the office to ask for guidance
Some offices can direct you to local solutions or specific release patterns. Bring proof of repeated attempts.
  2. Contact the Subdelegación del Gobierno
In some cases, they can provide guidance on how to proceed when the appointment system is saturated.
  3. Do not give up
Even if the appointment date falls after your ideal window, having a confirmed appointment is usually far better than having nothing.

Beware of scams and “appointment sellers”

Never pay anyone just to obtain an appointment. The appointment is free. Some people sell slots obtained through abusive methods, others are outright scams. You also must attend in person, nobody can replace you at the fingerprint appointment.

Can you do it without an appointment

In some smaller or less busy areas, certain police stations may accept walk ins on specific mornings. Do not assume this. Verify through your province office information pages or by contacting the office directly. For most readers in big cities, plan on needing a cita previa.

What to expect on the day

In summary

Securing the cita previa is often the most stressful step, but it is mandatory in most provinces. Start immediately, stay consistent, keep proof of attempts, do not pay anyone for a free appointment. Once you have the confirmation, you can focus on preparing documents and the fingerprint appointment itself.
